Role of Ayurveda In COVID 19 Pandemic

Last Updated on April 21, 2020 by Ashwini G

To curb the menace caused by Coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (aka AYUSH), recommended the states to try the traditional healing techniques alongside the conventional ones. The body suggests the use of anti-malarial medicine, AYUSH 64, along with sesame seed, Tulsi, Ginger, Guduchi, and Turmeric. However, the ministry got criticized when it recommended the Arsenic Album without any proper scientific evidence. The ministry has now asked the states to follow the three-point strategy to deal with Coronavirus. The three-point strategy suggests the following steps to battle the threat of Coronavirus: preventive care, symptom management of diseases that look similar to COVID-19, and introduction of alternative medicine alongside the conventional ones. The recommendation made to the state comes along with a list of 40 pieces of research that support the use of traditional medicine in dealing with the pandemic. Furthermore, the ministry has asked the states to ensure that AYUSH based public health response systems are fully functional in the respective states. Ayurveda is an important branch of AYUSH, and it is one of the oldest and time-tested fields of medicine. One of the best things about Ayurveda is that it believes in “prevention is better than cure.” Therefore, it offers a lot of methods that help in boosting the immunity system so that our chances of getting sick are reduced. So, let us take a look at what are the steps that Ayurveda suggests to help us protect ourselves from COVID-19.

Ayurvedic Preventive Measures for COVID-19 or Coronavirus

As the ministry suggests, people across the country should follow these simple steps every day to boost their immunity. These practices are not something that you should give up once the pandemic is over. They are something that should become a habit as it takes some time to boost immunity. Nonetheless, let us take a look at what AYUSH suggests as measures to help counter COVID-19. First of all, drink lukewarm water throughout the day as it makes you less susceptible to throat infection and helps boost the immune system. Practice yoga every day. This includes Yogasna, Pranayama, and meditation for at least 30 minutes. Doing this helps us calm our minds and, in turn, boosts the immune system. Another brilliant method to boost your immunity is through diet. So, make sure that your food contains spices such as turmeric (Haldi), cumin (jeera) and coriander (dhania). These spices have proven to boost immunity through research conducted in Ayurveda.

Boosting Immunity Through Ayurveda

The Ministry of AYUSH also suggests following these steps to boost your immunity so that you are less susceptible to Coronavirus infection. As mentioned before, these steps should be incorporated into our day to day lives for maximum benefits. You should consume one teaspoon (approx. 10g) of chyawanprash every morning as it is one of the best ways to boost our immune system. However, people who suffer from diabetes should check if their chyavanprash is sugar-free or not. Regular consumption of herbal tea (Kaadha), which is made using Tulsi, Cinnamon (Dalchini), Black Pepper, Dry Ginger, and Raisins, is a great way to boost your immunity. In addition to the aforementioned spices, you can also add jaggery or honey or lemon to provide taste. This herbal tea should be consumed twice a day for proper benefits. You should also drink a glass of warm milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric twice a day to help boost your immune system.

Treating Cough or Sore Throat

Flu-like symptoms are also common in patients who suffer from Coronavirus infection. So, if you have a persistent cough, then AYUSH suggests that you should consult a doctor. However, if your cold & cough isn’t serious, then there are some brilliant home remedies in Ayurveda to give you relief. Try inhaling steam with Mint (pudina) leaves along with Caraway Seeds (Ajwain) to help with a sore throat and nasal congestion. Doing this at least a couple of times a day would definitely give you some relief. Additionally, you can also try taking a spoon of Clove (Lawang) powder mixed with honey a couple of times a day to get relief from throat infections and cough.

Other Ayurvedic Solutions

There are a plethora of solutions for nearly each and every symptom in the branch of medicine known as Ayurveda and unlike other medical sciences, can follow the suggestions provided regardless of whether you have the symptoms or not. Ayurveda doesn’t have any side effects, and unless you have an allergy, you will be fine as all the ingredients used in Ayurvedic treatment are natural and healthy. So, here are a couple of things that you could do if you have any of the symptoms of flu as well as in case if you don’t have any. Apply sesame oil or coconut oil or Ghee in your nostrils in the morning as well as evening. Oil pulling therapy is also an excellent practice. You take a teaspoon of sesame or coconut oil and put it in your mouth, and then you swish it around for a couple of minutes before you spit it out. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water afterward and do this 2 to 3 times a day for most benefits.

Ayurveda has lots of options to help you boost your immunity system, and the best thing is that none of these options is difficult and can be incorporated in your daily life for additional benefits as well as to improve your immunity in general. In addition to these tips, follow the practice of washing your hands regularly and maintain distance from people as well as try not to leave your house unless it is necessary. Coronavirus is a serious issue, and we need to be extra careful if we want to overcome this dire situation.
